What is peat?
Peat is a fibrous, organic material that is formed when plants decompose in an oxygen-deficient environment, such as underwater. This material is full of valuable nutrients that are beneficial not only to plants and animals, but also to humans. During the humification process, which can take thousands of years, these substances are concentrated, creating a true natural treasure.
Uses of peat: more than potting soil
Although peat is most often used for agricultural or heating purposes – for example as potting soil or fuel – we saw something very special in it. In 1986 - the year the Hévíz Lake spa building burned down, since which time the extraction of medicinal mud from the lake has been prohibited - a patent was created under the leadership of our grandfather, which opened the way to the medicinal use of peat. Following joint research by the former Keszthely University of Agricultural Sciences and the Hévíz Thermal Bath and Hospital, peat mined in Alsópáhok became an alternative to the famous Hévíz medicinal mud.
What makes Alsópáhok peat special?
Not all peat is created equal – the production of therapeutic mud requires strict requirements. Three key criteria must be considered:
- pH value: The pH value of peat should be between 6 and 7.2, which is close to the neutral pH of water (7.0).
- Humic acid content: A humic acid content of at least 40% is required, which contributes to the detoxification and renewal of the skin.
- Organic matter content: Peat should contain between 65-75% combustible organic matter, which helps supply the skin with nutrients.
The peat from the Alsópáhok meadow meets all the criteria: its humic acid content ranges from 43-50% and its organic matter content ranges from 65-75%. It is the perfect raw material for Palean products, which support your skin's health with the power of nature.
